Will you live 2023 with Gumption & Soul?

2023 The Journey Continues

Are you a resolution-maker? A goal-setter? A forecaster? In our working days, yes, of course. But after leaving work, I talk to many women who quit the formal long-term planning.

Perhaps "planning" is too formal - to business-y term to use, but looking forward to where you want to go or how you want to change/evolve. Because you KNOW you'll evolve. It's just a matter of whether you'll be in charge - or not.

So, looking out 12 months from now - how do YOU want to evolve?

Me?

Legal French Resident

Here it is. I'm official. I'm now a legal resident of France. Or, as of the second of February, I will be when I land at CDG airport.

This has been a long-time dream. In the coming months, and year, I'll share more about this long road. In the meantime, I want to share a few quick observations and learnings from this journey, so far.

  1. You can have anything you want. Of course, within the laws of physics... but anything you're willing to work for, you can have. You just can't have everything you want.
  2. You're not special. You're human. You're unique in many ways, but you're not unique in many ways, too. The people around you - the same for them.
  3. You teach people how to treat you. What you accept from others becomes YOUR norm, not theirs. Boundaries are good things. It's your responsibility.
  4. Fear will never go away. Learn to differentiate the "what will they think" fear from the "this will cause immediate death" fear.
Stop doing whatever is causing the "immediate death" fear, lean into what is creating the "what will they think" fear and get used to it - use it for fuel.
  5. Be careful what you wish for. There are consequences for any change.

My heartfelt wish for you is a healthy, happy 2023 lived with all the gumption you can muster and with your soul alive and connected to your truth.

It’s been a week since I promised some insight about my big bungee jump move but here I am, still staring at this blank page. There are such mixed emotions with this move, I imagine that’s what the procrastination was about. But, moving forward — It’s happening. I’m moving from Austin to Charleston, hitting the road on Monday, 12 June.

THE worst thing you can do right after you retire is … commit - to anything.

Happiness & purpose go hand-in-hand. Are you struggling to find fulfillment and a sense of purpose in your post-career life? If so, you'd probably say that you're struggling to find happiness in your retirement, too. But, there's a theory that suggests that happiness actually INCREASES with age. You may initially scoff at this theory, but stick with me. It actually makes sense.

Does this sound familiar? After the honeymoon phase of retirement wears off, you start feeling like something is missing from your life. It’s not the money, or the work itself, but missing more of a sense of purpose. It's not uncommon to feel this way. You might say that you need to “ find your new purpose ”. But, I’m going to challenge you to think about it differently. An ADVERB not NOUN Rather than looking to FIND your purpose, try committing to LIVE with purpose . I used to consider purpose as something to pursue, like a job title or an award. But now I believe the true purpose is deeper and more personal than that. Purpose is a lifestyle, a way of being in the world where you fully engage with the present moment, which enables you to better recognize and make the most of every opportunity. Your purpose isn’t any one specific activity or event. There are the lucky few who do discover a calling, a key purpose for which they were born - or that's our perception.
